Sea•Glo Marine Varnish — FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What surfaces is Sea•Glo Varnish designed for?
Sea•Glo Marine Varnish is formulated for bare and previously varnished wood surfaces on boats, including brightwork, spars, trim, and interior woodwork.
How many coats of Sea•Glo Varnish do I need?
For new bare wood or epoxy coated surfaces, we recommend a minimum of 3-5 coats for a durable, high-gloss finish. Maintenance coats on previously varnished surfaces typically require 2-3 coats. More coats applied, offer better UV protection and a deeper finish.
Do I need to thin the first coat?
Depending on your substrate, you can thin the first coat 10–15% with mineral spirits or the recommended thinner to promote penetration into bare wood. Epoxy coated surfaces are sealed, and typically do not require thinned varnish. Subsequent coats can be applied full strength or thinned slightly for flow.
How long should I wait between coats?
You can re-coat every hour at 72F or once dry to touch. Up to 5-6 coats a day.
Can Sea•Glo Varnish be used below the waterline?
No. Sea•Glo Varnish is designed for above-waterline brightwork only. For below-waterline protection, use a compatible epoxy barrier system such as Sea Forge Epoxy, and a antifouling or 2-part Sea•Glo paint.
What sheen level does Sea•Glo Varnish provide?
Sea•Glo Brilliance (High Gloss) and Sea•Glo Endurance (Satin) finishes are available. If you desire a satin finish It is recommended to use Brilliance for build coats and finish with Endurance for your final 1-2 coats. This maintains the details of the grain without getting hazy.
How do I prepare the surface before applying Sea•Glo Varnish?
Thoroughly clean all surface prior to sanding. Sand bare wood to 120–150 grit, then wipe clean with a lint free rag and mineral spirits. Remove all dust, oil, and contaminants. Previously varnished surfaces should be sanded to 220 grit and cleaned thoroughly.
What is the best application method?
A high-quality natural bristle or foam brush works best. Apply in long, even strokes with the grain. Avoid overworking the varnish once it begins to set.
How do I maintain a Sea•Glo Varnish finish?
Inspect annually and apply 1–2 maintenance coats as needed. Light sanding between maintenance coats ensures strong adhesion and extends the life of the finish.
Is Sea•Glo Varnish UV resistant?
Yes. Both Sea•Glo Varnishes contains UV absorbers to protect the wood, and epoxy coated surfaces from sun damage, extending the life of your brightwork in harsh marine environments.
