Sea•Forge Epoxy — FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the mix ratio for Sea Forge epoxy?
Sea Forge epoxy systems use a 2:1 mix ratio by volume (2 parts resin to 1 part hardener). Always measure carefully, and do not alter the 2:1 ratio.
How long does Sea Forge Epoxy take to cure?
At 70°F (21°C), a Sea Forge Resin and Slow Hardener mixtures initial cure in approximately 20-24 hours and will full cure in about 7 days. Lower temperatures will extend cure times significantly, and other factors may apply. See product data sheets for specific information.
Can Sea Forge epoxy be used below the waterline?
Yes. Sea Forge epoxy systems are formulated for marine use and provide excellent moisture resistance for below-waterline applications including hull sheathing with fiberglass cloth and barrier coating.
Does Sea Forge epoxy blush?
Sea Forge epoxy is a non-blushing formula. You do not need to wash the surface between coats, making it ideal for multi-coat applications.
How many coats should I apply?
For most applications, 2–3 coats are recommended. Apply additional coats while the previous coat is still in the green (tacky) stage for best inter-coat adhesion. Scuff/sand and clean the surface between coats if additional applications are not applied within 5 days.
What surfaces can Sea Forge epoxy bond to?
Sea Forge epoxy bonds excellently to wood, fiberglass, and most metals. Surface preparation — sanding and cleaning — is critical for maximum adhesion.
Can I thin Sea Forge epoxy?
Thinning is not recommended as it can compromise the structural and moisture-barrier properties of the cured epoxy. For better penetration on dry wood, warm the resin slightly before application.
What is the pot life of Sea Forge epoxy when mixed with Slow Hardener?
Pot life is approximately 20–30 minutes at 70°F depending on the hardener used. Working in smaller batches will extend your working time. See product data sheets for specific information.
How do I clean up uncured Sea Forge epoxy?
Use denatured alcohol or acetone to clean tools and surfaces before the epoxy cures. Once cured, epoxy can only be removed by sanding or grinding.
How do I safety work with Sea Forge epoxy?
Always wear nitrile gloves, safety glasses, protective clothing (long sleeved shirt, long pants) and work in a well-ventilated area. Avoid skin contact with uncured epoxy. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full safety information. Do not use solvents to remove epoxy from your hands.
